A Yam Yam Sae (I Have Nobody) Moore

Traditional and Colonial Songs from Liberia

Hawa Moore

The songs on this recording are an eclectic mix, a musical portrait of Hawa, her varied musical environments, and diverse cultural background. In order to represent this diversity, Hawa has chosen songs in Vai, her language, as well as in Bassa, Kpelle, Gio, Kru, English, and Liberian English - a combination of standard English and indigenous Liberian languages.

She sings traditional songs, Christian songs, West African Highlife songs, and her own compositions. Many of these songs, particularly Hawa's originals, have appeared on her earlier Liberian recordings as lively dance music with large backup bands. On this recording, a more open acoustic sound allows for a focus on Hawa's voice and on the melodic and rhythmic elements of the music.

Bullet Audio Sample:1) Dei Ya Monnue and 2) A Yam Yam Sae
