Community Profiles
ICP is pleased to present a series of "community profiles"
of relatively new neighbors in the central Pennsylvania Community.
On this site, you will find information about newly emerging
ethnic communities, including Indians and Chinese, and faith-based
communities including Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, and
Baha'is. In these profiles, you will find a Question and Answer
format that provides information on such topics as:
- size and residential distribution of the community,
- language,
- religious beliefs and practices,
- cultural traditions as practiced in the U.S.,
- contributions of the community to American life and culture,
- health issues,
- dimensions of diversity within this community,
- organizations and contacts through which the public can
learn more about this community.
The work on these
profiles was initially developed during June-August 2002 by
student intern Leah Sacks, an undergraduate student at Brandeis
University, supported by the Arnold J. Frankel Internship
at ICP. Community members have provided valuable feedback
and have offered suggestions for revision and information
useful to keep the site current. Students in Shalom
Staub's Spring 2003 course, "New American Religious Diversity"
(Dickinson College) developed additional information and materials
for the community profiles, an effort affiliated with Harvard
University's Pluralism
Project.
ICP looks forward to expanding this section of community
profiles, with updated information about the current communities
featured and the addition of features on other new immigrant
communities.
