Nelsy

"I was in love. I thought that he was in love with me.  He bring me here and we married here. Sometimes I think it was my destiny to do it, to come here. I thought that at the same time, that it was a beautiful thing – a dream that everything would be perfect. But it wasn’t.  All the problems started when I said no and he doesn’t like it that I say, "No". He start to hit me… he threatened he will kill me…"

"He sent a letter to Immigration telling so many bad things about me. And Immigration sent a letter to his house.  It had a court date and everything, but I couldn’t go because I didn’t know.  He didn’t tell me. Well, that was the way that he sent me to jail.   It was horrible!"

"I was in jail… with my bad English, I was helping so many people with their lawyers. So many girls.  One lawyer…he said, 'Nelsy, why you are there?' I told him everything. [He said] 'I will take your case and you will be out of the jail.' That was God who was sending that. Because I was helping all the others."

"In here, this state…… teach us how to fight for our rights. If you don’t feel comfort with something you can express and let the people know how you think. I think that this is one of the freedoms that we are looking for."

Nelsy was born in Colombia and grew up with eight brothers and sisters.  She worked as a computer programmer for several years before coming to Pennsylvania for marriage.  She is now in a new relationship and works in sales.  Her two-year-old baby boy is the love of her life.
