Fanna Fannaram

"One lady I met said, 'If you were in your country, you will go under a tree and give birth.' They thought, we have no education, no culture; we live with animals. I laugh. I say, no, in our country like here we have hospitals. My Mom when she gave birth of me, she went to the hospital. And if I was in my country I will go to the hospital to have the baby. 'Really!', she said, 'So where do you live? In Africa, they told us you live on a tree...' Yes, they thought we live with animals on trees…really funny!"

Fannaram was born in Niger, West Africa in the mid 1970s.  She followed her husband to the United States in 2001 to pursue her education.  Her son Ismail was born in Pennsylvania.  Both have returned to Niger as a result of immigration complications.
